Tree-Planting to Honor Jones

Share

City officials, relatives and friends will gather next month to plant a tree in memory of Kenneth B. Jones, a retired police sergeant and longtime City Council member, city officials said.

The community volunteer was selected by the Parks and Recreation Commission as the 15th resident to be honored in Boisseranc Park’s Memorial Grove, which is dedicated to those who gave time, thought and energy to the community. A black alder will be planted in his name.

Jones, who died in 1994, was a native of the city and dedicated much of his personal and professional life to civic activities.

He became a firefighter in 1949, and moved to the Police Department four years later. He rose through the ranks, becoming a sergeant in 1960 and acting as chief of police that year. He was a three-time Police Officer of the Year and retired in 1979.

He served on the City Council from 1980 to 1990 and joined a host of civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club.

The tree-planting ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Sept. 12 at the park, 7520 Dale St.
