Police searched Thursday for a 21-year-old Los Angeles man who tried to carjack a BMW from two off-duty police officers and then shot at them as he ran away after the failed attempt, according to authorities.

Before the carjacking incident, Kevin Scott Wigginton--who was last known to live in Silver Lake--and two female accomplices also robbed at gunpoint a 19-year-old man near the same neighborhood, said Rick Young, a spokesman for the Glendale Police Department.

“They were coming into Glendale, preying on our residents and then leaving the area,” Young said. “Unfortunately for them, they chose the wrong victims in [the carjacking] case.”

After the carjacking attempt, police arrested suspected accomplices Claudine Guerrero, 21, of Los Angeles and a 17-year-old girl from Colton. Young said the pair were being held on suspicion of attempted murder and carjacking.

The carjacking incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of West Milford Street, according to authorities.

Two Los Angeles Police Department officers--at least one of whom lives in Glendale--were talking by one of the officer’s cars when they were approached suddenly by Wigginton, who was armed, and Guerrero, Young said.

Wigginton demanded the car and told the officer in the driver’s seat to get out and lie face down on the street.

As Guerrero searched the officer on the street, the second officer pulled out his gun and ordered Wigginton to drop his weapon, Young said.

Wigginton and the officer exchanged fire, but neither was hit, police said. As Wigginton ran from the scene, he fired at least three additional rounds, but did not hit the officers.

The LAPD officers held Guerrero for Glendale police, Young said. They also pointed out a vehicle in which they said the assailants had been riding that was still in the neighborhood.

Glendale police pulled the vehicle over and arrested the 17-year-old driver, alleged to be a friend of Wigginton and Guerrero.

Earlier, Young said, the trio had robbed at gunpoint a 19-year-old man arriving at a residence. Wigginton forced the man to the ground and held him at gunpoint while Guerrero searched him and stole property, including his car keys.

The man’s car was not taken, however.

The Glendale Crime Stoppers are offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Wigginton, according to authorities.
