2 Assistant Chiefs Among Job Finalists

Two of the three finalists for the Oxnard police chief position are in-house candidates--assistant chiefs Tom Cady and Stan Myers.

Personnel Manager Lino Corona declined Friday to identify the third candidate seeking to replace former Chief Harold Hurtt.

An advocate of community-oriented policing, Hurtt moved to Phoenix in April to assume the top law enforcement post there.

His successor will be named in two to three weeks, Corona said.

Oxnard was the first law enforcement job for both Cady and Myers, and the two have climbed the ranks together. Cady joined the department in December 1971 and Myers in the first months of 1972.

Cady heads the investigations and administrative divisions, while Myers oversees the department’s patrol operations.

Five candidates were interviewed by two panels--a citizens and a law enforcement committee. The panels recommended the trio of finalists to City Manager Ed Sotelo. The police chief position, which will pay from $90,000 to $111,000 a year, attracted 26 applicants.

No finalists have been selected for the fire chief’s job left vacant by Randy Coggan. That position drew 59 resumes. Two similar committees will interview five applicants and select three finalists, Corona said.
