A 13-year-old boy originally considered a runaway is being sought by police as a missing person, Oxnard Police Cmdr. Ralph Nieves said Saturday night.

Roberto Montoya was last seen by his family Friday when he left home after school for a friend’s house, Nieves said. The boy lives with his father and grandmother in the 1300 block of Gina Drive.

He telephoned home from the friend’s house and was told to return home. When he hadn’t arrived about 8 p.m., his family called police.

By 10 p.m. Saturday, officers were canvassing his neighborhood and asking administrators from his school, Fremont Junior High, to help find the boy’s friend, whom he apparently met last week when school started.

Nieves said Montoya is considered a missing person because his father and neighbors said he had no reason to run away.
