Boos Brothers

Cecilia Rasmussen’s story, “4 Brothers Made Dining History” (Nov. 22), brought back memories of my late mother.

As a high school student on summer break 80 years ago, Cora Hawes of Glendora rode the Pacific Electric (Big Red Cars) into Los Angeles daily. For a 25-cent fare, she could ride in for the midday shift, linger in downtown for a few hours and work the dinner shift at the Boos Brothers Cafeteria on Hill Street. This was a real adventure for a young woman from a small farm-oriented town.

She told this tale of hard work at Boos Brothers in the “big city” many times, so it was gratifying to see these Los Angeles pioneers recognized and appreciated.
