Custom Cookie Buyers Are Eating Their Words

The superstitious will always think fortune cookies are the best part of a Chinese meal. Never mind that their generic messages unfailingly state the obvious or allude to some vague future that would probably happen anyway.

Offering a new twist on the traditional, Calico, in Vacaville, Calif., lets you decide your own fate, printing customized messages on tiny slips of white paper and baking them into the dough.

Marriage proposals, jokes and party invitations are just a few examples of what customers have requested, Calico founder Kevin Kauffman says.

“I don’t know why, but for some reason, our cookies taste better than others,” he claims. The cookies are vanilla, though chocolate and other flavors are available. But if you purchase them, you’d better be hungry. The minimum order is 250.

“The unfortunate thing about fortune cookies is they’re big and bulky. It’s a pretty big box.”
