With No Challengers, City May Cancel Election

Share

For the first time this century, City Council elections are expected to be canceled because no one is challenging the mayor and two council members who are up for reelection.

For Mayor Robert Bartlett and council members Lara Blakely and Tom Adams, the March 1999 election will be decided Dec. 15. That is when the City Council is expected to cancel the election and declare the trio elected without opposition.

The move will save the city about $50,000, according to the city clerk.

City Clerk Linda Proctor said a review of city records revealed that this is the first time a city election has been canceled in Monrovia.

Bartlett will now begin his sixth two-year term as mayor. The two council members will serve four-year terms. Blakely was first appointed to the council a decade ago, while Adams won a seat in 1994.
