Panel Is Created to Handle Tobacco Tax Proceeds
The Board of Supervisors has created a commission to disburse hundreds of millions of dollars expected from passage of Proposition 10.
The proposition, which narrowly passed in November’s elections, levies a 50-cent tax on cigarettes and directs that the money be used on early childhood care.
To be eligible for the money, the county must have a commission in place by Jan. 1, 1999, to handle the funds.
The board decided Tuesday that the commission would consist of one supervisor, the heads of the departments of health services and mental health, five members appointed by the five individual supervisors and a specialist in early childhood education appointed by the county superintendent of education.
Additionally, the Children and Families First--Proposition 10 Commission will include four nonvoting members from other commissions on children’s issues.
