A college professor giving final exams Thursday night was fatally shot by a man who opened fire with a rifle, reloaded and fired again before fleeing.

Andrzej Olbrot, a 52-year-old Wayne State University engineering professor, died at Detroit Receiving Hospital shortly after the shooting, authorities said.

“Clearly it did not appear to be a random act. It appeared to be one where the professor was a target of the shooting,” Police Chief Benny Napoleon told Detroit radio station WWJ-AM.

None of the roughly 24 students in the graduate engineering class were injured.

Authorities did not have a motive in the shooting. The suspect, identified by Napoleon only as a man in his 40s, remained at large late Thursday.

Napoleon said the gunman walked into the classroom “and just fired.” After the initial gunfire, the assailant reloaded and fired again at the professor before tucking the gun in a sack and walking from the classroom, Napoleon said.
