Deputies Give Nod to Proposed Contract

After three weeks of negotiations, the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff’s Assn. tentatively agreed Friday to accept a two-year contract that would increase salaries.

The contract must still be ratified by the entire VCDSA membership, which will vote on the matter Dec. 28.

At issue in the negotiations was the pay scale of deputies. The VCDSA claimed its pay lagged behind that of other departments.

Association officials estimate that Ventura County sheriff’s deputies earn 7% less than officers in the Los Angeles, Oxnard, Ventura and Simi Valley police departments.

The contract, if approved, would provide for a 4% increase in salaries in January, followed by additional 4% increases in July 1999, July 2000 and December 2000.

In exchange for the salary increase, the association agreed to relinquish its right to appeal improper statements in performance reviews to an arbitration board.
