Two drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol collided in an unusual weekend traffic accident in Orange.

A suspected drunk driver veered her car into an oncoming lane, striking a sport-utility vehicle whose driver also is suspected of being drunk, police said.

The accident happened early Saturday morning on Katella Avenue in Orange, said Sgt. Kevin Roberts.

Roberts said the woman was driving west on Katella at California Street about 1:37 a.m. when it veered into the eastbound lanes, colliding head-on with the other vehicle.

The woman and a passenger had to be cut from the car and were taken to a hospital, Roberts said. The woman was in serious condition Saturday and is expected to charged with driving under the influence, Roberts said.

The male driver of the sport-utility complained of pain but did not require hospitalization. He was released after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Roberts said.

Police did not release names of either driver nor the identity or condition of the passenger in the woman’s car.
