Low-Income Housing Project Approved
Despite protests from many neighboring residents, the City Council approved development of a low-income apartment complex in the El Rio West neighborhood.
The council voted 4 to 1 Tuesday night to approve the 62-unit Vineyard Gardens. Councilman Tom Holden cast the dissenting vote.
The council’s action allows Mayor Manuel Lopez to sign a settlement agreement with the project’s developer, who sued the city after an initial proposal was rejected.
The project site is a 3.4-acre parcel south of Collins Street and west of Vineyard Avenue.
The original proposal called for a 94-unit apartment complex to be built on 5.4 acres.
