Defensive Starter Out With Arm Injury

Share

The Bruins lost another defensive starter to injury Monday, but they hope his absence will be temporary.

End Pete Holland left practice with his left arm in a sling and nursing what the medical staff initially called a sprained elbow. More should be known today, after the swelling goes down and the arm is examined.

“They feel like he’ll probably be all right for the game,” Coach Bob Toledo said of the Rose Bowl against Wisconsin. “But it still hurts him.”

The defensive line has already lost starting nose guard Micah Webb for the Jan. 1 game because of a torn knee ligament.

Meanwhile, linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo did some running, but has not practiced since spraining a knee ligament Dec. 5 against Miami. The absence is not critical now because the Bruins have not yet spent much time on the game plan for Wisconsin, and Ayanbadejo told Toledo he should be ready soon.

Ayanbadejo probably will not join full workouts before the Christmas break. But he could be back Saturday.

Wednesday’s practice is the last that will be open to the public. Starting Saturday, all Spaulding Field workouts will be closed. . . . Toledo said it is unlikely Freddie Mitchell, making surprisingly good progress from a broken leg, will play against Wisconsin. No decision will come until next week.
