OREGON (8-3) vs. COLORADO (7-4)

at Honolulu

12:30 p.m., Channel 7

* AT A GLANCE: Two former baseball players who gave up their careers for college football will be quarterbacking their teams in the opener of this Hawaii doubleheader. The Ducks are led by Akili Smith, the Pacific 10 Conference’s co-offensive player of the year. Smith finished second in the nation in passing efficiency. Mike Moschetti directs the offense for the Buffaloes of the Big 12 Conference. He passed for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Smith and Moschetti were baseball draftees in 1993--Smith by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh round and Moschetti in the second round by the Oakland Athletics. The Buffaloes will face a Duck defense that improved to 54th nationally after ranking 102nd in 1997. The Ducks gave up 390 yards and 25.2 points a game. Oregon is seeking to avenge a 38-6 loss to Colorado in the 1996 Cotton Bowl, a game in which the Buffaloes used a fake punt with a 32-6 lead on a drive that led to their last score. “We didn’t intend to show anyone up,” Colorado Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “This is a new year, a new team.” Oregon beat Air Force, 43-13, last season in the Las Vegas Bowl; Colorado did not go to a bowl.

Oahu Bowl

AIR FORCE (11-1) vs. WASHINGTON (6-5)

at Honolulu

5:30 p.m., ESPN

* AT A GLANCE: The 16th-ranked Falcons set three goals to start the season and two have been met: beat the other two military academies and defeat Brigham Young for the Western Athletic Conference title. To complete the trifecta, they must beat Washington in the inaugural Oahu Bowl. Air Force Coach Fisher DeBerry is counting on Blane Morgan, the triple-option quarterback, to lead the way against the Huskies, who finished fifth in the Pacific 10. Morgan, who succeeded his brother Beau at quarterback, rushed for 508 yards, scored 15 touchdowns and directed an offense that finished third in the nation with 266.8 rushing yards a game. He also passed for 1,144 yards and 10 touchdowns, and his efficiency rating of 162.6 set a school record. Washington has a standout quarterback of its own in Brock Huard, who is expected to give up his final season of eligibility and declare himself eligible for the NFL draft. It is the second consecutive bowl game in Hawaii for Washington, which defeated Michigan State, 51-23, in last year’s Aloha Bowl.
