An Oink, Oink Here

The 6900 block of Hollywood Boulevard is a lesson in advertising technology. There, amid the congested traffic, tourist shops and crowds of moviegoers, is Babe.

A pig in the city, indeed.

The normally diminutive piece of pork stands 12 stories tall on the front of the Fries Entertainment Building. Using the same technology that allows MTA buses to be wrapped in advertising, the monolithic Babe image was placed on the building with Scotchprint--an adhesive developed by 3M, the Scotch-tape people.

Next door, at the El Capitan Theater, is another extra-large ad, for “A Bug’s Life,” which was adhered using a different method--spraying the image onto a large piece of thin vinyl and tying it down. George Schmidt, 3M’s Western area sales manager, says, “It’s similar to a shower curtain.”
