Hungry ATM

On a recent trip through Malaysia, my wife and I decided to use a bank’s ATM to get some local currency. While we were reading the ATM screen and following instructions, the machine made all the expected noise but no money came out. Then the machine swallowed my ATM card.

I asked for the bank manager and requested my card back. After a lengthy discussion and producing evidence of my identity through passport and driver’s license, I was told that my card would not be returned. In fact, I was told it had to be returned to the originating bank or be destroyed by this bank.

Luckily, we had other funds available. I believe my experience is by no means unique, but it underlines the fallacy of depending on a banking system that makes no allowances or adjustments and denies funds when you most need them.
