Volunteer Vital English needs tutors to help non-English-speaking adults learn conversational English in Azusa, Chino, Claremont, Diamond Bar, La Verne, Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga, Montclair, San Dimas, Upland, Walnut and West Covina. The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program of the Center for Health Care Rights needs volunteer counselors to provide free information and advocacy for Medicare beneficiaries in Los Angeles County. Tax-Aide, a joint program of AARP and the IRS, needs volunteers to help low-income senior citizens and disabled people with their state and federal taxes. Training begins in January and volunteers are expected to work at least four hours a week from Feb. 1 to April 15. The Braille Institute in Los Angeles is holding an open house for prospective volunteers Jan. 12 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 741 N. Vermont Ave. Volunteer opportunities including working with consultants in visual aids, answering the (800) BRAILLE line, and assisting in creative arts. Training is provided. Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles needs volunteers to assist passengers at LAX by acting as liaisons to professional social workers, meeting and accompanying travelers between terminals, assisting with directions and access to local transportation and giving tourists information about accommodations and sightseeing attractions.
