Youth Safe After Being Lost Overnight in Forest
A 16-year-old hiker from El Monte was found Monday in the Angeles National Forest after being lost overnight.
The boy was discovered by the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue team near a camp at Chantry Flats.
Sheriff Deputies said the teenager, whose name was not released, escaped the overnight ordeal with only minor scratches. Deputies took the boy to Arcadia Methodist Hospital, where he was treated and released.
The boy was found shortly before 8 a.m. as he was walking on a trail back toward the camp, Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Young said.
The teenager wandered away from a group of hikers Sunday near Chantry Flats. The boy apparently stumbled down an embankment and lost his flashlight, authorities said, so he decided to stay there until sunrise.
