Blackhawks Trade Coffey

The Chicago Blackhawks traded disappointing defenseman Paul Coffey on Tuesday to the Carolina Hurricanes for right wing Nelson Emerson.

Coffey, acquired from Philadelphia for a draft pick in the off-season, has been limited by a sore back and has no goals and four assists in 10 games this season.

Emerson has eight goals and 13 assists this season.

Ken Hitchcock of the Dallas Stars and Lindy Ruff of the Buffalo Sabres were picked as the head coaches for the 1999 NHL All-Star game. Hitchcock will coach the North America team and Ruff the World All-Star team in the Jan. 24 game at the Ice Palace in Tampa, Fla. . . . Buffalo goaltender Dominik Hasek and winger Jaromir Jagr of the Pittsburgh Penguins lead the voting for the World All-Star team. Teemu Selanne of the Ducks also leads in the race for a starting position. . . . The Calgary Flames reacquired Andrei Trefilov from the Blackhawks for future considerations.
