Swing is alive and kicking up its heels in Los Angeles. Since it hit the nostalgia comeback trail a scant few years ago, swing clubs have been luring professional dancers and novices who trade jeans and T-shirts for platform shoes, suspenders and fedoras.
The Derby in Los Feliz continues to be a hot spot. Curtained booths, pool tables and a curved bar set the mood while live bands provide the music.
It’s an inclusive crowd, with couples in their 20s dancing next to couples in their 60s. After all, it’s not just an era--it’s a state of mind.
