Interim Replacement for Police Chief Is Hired

City officials have hired former Long Beach Police Chief William Ellis to serve as interim replacement for Police Chief John Distelrath, whom the city is seeking to fire.

Ellis began work Wednesday, a day after the City Council approved the hiring.

Ellis got a taste for the job ahead of him at Tuesday’s council meeting when police officers picketed over contract talks and addressed council members.

Last week, City Manager James Starbird issued a notice of intent to fire Distelrath based on the results of a city attorney’s investigation into allegations against the chief, including possible conflict of interest. Distelrath, who has denied any wrongdoing, remains on paid leave.

The City Council also has decided to appoint Public Works Director Patrick Glover as interim city manager when Starbird leaves next month to become city manager in Glendale, officials said.
