$4.5-Million Grant Considered for Trail
The city is hoping to get a $4.5-million boost from the federal government on Monday that could finally pave the way for a 4-mile recreational beach trail running parallel to the railroad tracks.
The Orange County Transportation Authority, which has made the city’s beach trail its top priority, will vote on whether to grant the city $400,000 for fiscal year 1998-99, followed by an additional $4.1 million for 1999-2000 for the project.
The proposed boardwalk could eventually connect trails at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point and San Onofre State Beach.
Surfers, joggers, bicyclists and roller-bladers welcome the new boardwalk, but county officials also say safe pathways are needed to protect the more than 2 million visitors who brave the railroad tracks to reach the beach every year.
