FISH REPORT

FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Striped bass very active. Several anglers caught 15-pounders, with AC Plugs and Castaic Softbaits accounting for most. Ed Fuente and Sam Amourmino, Los Angeles, 15 largemouth bass to six pounds, on water dogs at upper lake. Wesley Heck, Tujunga, with guide Pat Buckley, 10 bass to 4 1/2 pounds, on crawdads and mudsuckers at upper lake. Some trout caught near ramp at upper lake.

LAKE PIRU--Trout action has slowed as a result of a storm that raised the lake level 15 feet, but bass action has remained fairly steady, with fish biting on night crawlers off rocky ledges. A 20-pound catfish was reportedly caught.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass were extremely active before the storm and remained fairly active afterward. Several fish weighed in at more than 10 pounds, but most were in the five-pound range. Catfish, crappie, bluegill and bass were also on the bait shop slate.

LAKE CACHUMA--Fishing was fair before the storm, but lake personnel have been reeling since. The lake rose 18 feet, went over the spillway and tore the docks from their moorings. Best advice is to call ahead: (805) 688-4040.

LAKE CASITAS--Bass bite was good before the storm. Sammy Chavez, Oxnard, 12-2 and 5-0 bass, on Deadly Duo lure. Ed Anderson, Chino Hills, 11-4 bass, on plastic worm. John Shull, Ojai, 12-10 and 7-8, on Castaic Softbait. Jack Gallimore, Santa Paula, 9-8, 9-0, 8-12, 7-12 and 4-0 bass, on Stocker Bass lure. Smaller fish biting on plastic worms and crawdads. Top catfish, a 15-pounder by Jim Davis, Oxnard, on mackerel. Some trout.

CORONA LAKE--New concessionaires Doug Elliott and Bill Andrews, who purchased former concessionaires Outdoor Safaris International, have planned heavy stocking in anticipation of a Feb. 19 opener.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--New concessionaires Elliott and Andrews (see Corona Lake) have vowed to continue the heavy stocking of trout and catfish and will “spruce up” the place in anticipation of a Feb. 12 opener.

IRVINE LAKE--The rain figures to slow the trout bite for several days, but Power Bait and inflated night crawlers could still score a lunker or two. Fishing for catfish may actually improve in the murkiness. Try mackerel. A catfish derby is scheduled for Saturday night. Details: (714) 649-9111.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Limits of trout averaging 1-2 pounds common before the storm, but murky water has made fishing spotty. Night Crawlers and Power Bait were the top catchers. Largemouth bass activity on the rise as the fish are in their pre-spawn mode, staging in the shallows. Catfish bite good at dam on mackerel and night crawlers.

LAKE SKINNER--A 20-pound striped bass was caught by Corey Dispensiero of Palmdale on a Castaic Softbait at Ramp 2. The striper bite has subsided in recent days, however. Other species are slow as well.

LAKE PERRIS--Kurt Haggstorom, Palm Springs, 12-4 bass, on Castaic Softbaits at Rockpile. Duane Catherow, Chino, 8-2 bass, on waterdog at island. Several smaller bass biting on plastic worms and waterdogs. Power Bait accounting for some limits of trout.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Lots of limits of trout before the storm, very few afterward. But some fish are being caught, mostly on inflated night crawlers and Sierra Gold. Best lures are orange Rapalas and Trout Teasers. No fish over three pounds.

SALTWATER

REDONDO BEACH--21 anglers (2 boats): 8 calico bass, 26 sand bass, 5 halibut, 1 black sea bass (released), 1 perch, 1 whitefish.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--14 anglers (1 boat): 41 sand bass, 12 calico bass, 6 barracuda, 5 sheephead, 4 whitefish, 3 sculpin.

LONG BEACH (Marina Sportfishing)--10 anglers (1 boat): 2 sand bass, 6 whitefish, 45 rockcod, 1 cowcod, 13 red snapper, 6 salmon grouper.

NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--27 anglers (1 boat): 30 sand bass, 1 calico bass, 12 sculpin, 2 mackerel. (Davey’s Locker)--19 anglers (1 boat): 51 sand bass, 42 sculpin, 3 calico bass.

DANA WHARF--17 anglers (2 boats): 28 calico bass, 31 sand bass, 2 halibut, 1 sculpin, 1 sheephead, 1 blue perch.
