Centers as Hubs of Community

Share

Thank you for your timely editorial of Jan. 27, “Salgado Center Is a Big Plus.”

Having the endorsement and support of The Times is a most welcomed asset that will help in the development of more and better designed community centers.

As a retired parks and recreation administrator, I was very pleased to read your editorial that focused on the many positive uses of a multifaceted community center.

Yes, a well-designed and -equipped community center can serve the entire community, from prenatal care classes to senior citizen programs.

By their very nature, community centers are used for public meetings, numerous special interest groups and classes such as dancing, sewing, cooking, bridge, crafts and music.

Community centers can and should be the “hub of the community.” The Parks and Recreation Department motto is “Something for everybody.”

We have learned from case histories that planned recreation programs are a deterrent and enemy of gang and drug abuse activity. Building more and better community centers today will help to reduce the high price of jails tomorrow.
