A 50-year-old man underwent nine hours of surgery Sunday for gunshot wounds he received when a sheriff’s deputy shot him, according to his attorney.

Walter Francis Brazenor was shot about 5 p.m. Saturday, said his longtime family lawyer, Jenny Scovis.

The shooting occurred after a deputy responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a two-story house in the 1000 block of Calle Pecos, Sheriff’s Capt. Keith Parks said. The deputy shot a man three times in the upper body as he stood in his frontyard refusing to put down two large knives, Parks said.

“They were exotic-type knives, mini-swords almost, definitely not kitchen knives or anything like that,” Parks said.

Sheriff’s Department officials would not release the name of the deputy who shot the man, nor would they confirm the shooting victim’s name.

Neighbors on Calle Pecos declined to comment on what happened except to say that Brazenor had been experiencing health problems recently.

Brazenor was taken to Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks. A nursing supervisor would not release Brazenor’s condition late Sunday.

Parks said he was not sure whether the shooting victim would be arrested.
