School District Will Face Loss of 100 Teachers, Administrators
Estancia High School will be the hardest hit of Newport-Mesa Unified School District campuses by a wave of retirements, losing 10 teachers, two assistant principals and the head counselor.
“It is going to be really hard to replace all these people,” Principal Peggy Anatol said. Several instructors, she said, were veterans who started at Estancia when the school opened in 1965.
Newport-Mesa recently accepted the retirement of about 100 instructors and administrators under an early retirement deal. Another area hard hit is secondary school English, with 10 instructors opting to retire.
The retirements are effective in April, although many will stay through the school year on emeritus status. The district has yet to say how much will be saved by the retirements. The teachers union estimates $2.5 million in savings over five years.
The district will hold a job fair for prospective applicants from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Newport-Mesa Education Center, 2985 Bear St., Costa Mesa. Information: (714) 424-5000.
