Marilyn Manson and Fiona Apple don’t exactly put you into the Valentine mood? Head back to the decades when romance flowered in pop music. K-ERTH’s third annual Valentine’s Concert is headlined by the great, melancholy soul singer Ben E. King, and also features Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals, Mitch Ryder and Ronnie Spector at the Universal Amphitheatre. The Mark Taper Forum’s theater for young people, P.L.A.Y. (Performing for Los Angeles Youth,) presents a special public performance of its touring school show “The Square Root of Terrible,” a comic tale about peer pressure and math anxiety.

Buffalo Nights Theatre Co. presents the world premiere of “Featuring Loretta” and the West Coast premiere of “Problem Child,” part of “Suburban Motel,” a dark, six-play comedy suite by internationally noted Canadian playwright George F. Walker. The two dark comedies about motel room denizens mark the new mid-size Falcon Theatre’s first full production.

More than some 40 years ago, influential music producer and hip-hop entrepreneur Quincy Jones played trumpet with Lionel Hampton and toured the world as a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra. Jones has never forgotten his jazz roots. A Tribute to Quincy Jones: A Man and His Music, a benefit for the UCLA Jazz Studies Program, will feature guitarist Kenny Burrell, saxophonist Gary Foster, keyboardist Billy Childs and other UCLA jazz faculty and students, as well as Jones conducting his arrangements .
