USC Janitors Win Contract After Two-Year Fight

Janitors at the University of Southern California have won a union contract after a two-year battle, union officials said Wednesday.

Representatives from Service Employees International, Local 1877, and ServiceMaster, a management company, agreed to a contract that increases hourly wages by $1.05 over three years and secures health care benefits, said Leticia Salcedo, assistant director of the local.

Members will vote on the contract later this month, she said. The new pact is a victory in the nationwide “Justice for Janitors” campaign, Salcedo said.

Henry Lascher, director of custodial services for ServiceMaster at USC, said both sides are happy with the contract. “I’m glad that this chapter is behind us.”
