Council Votes to Lease 17 Electric Vehicles for 3 Years

Saying they want the city to do its part in cleaning up the air, council members this week voted to lease 17 electric vehicles for the next three years.

City Councilman John W. Hedges cast the lone vote against the plan, criticizing the program’s $414,000 sticker price.

“I think it’s a shame that we’re going to have nothing to show for it at the end of three years but fond memories of driving around in electric cars,” Hedges said.

Other council members said most of the money, about $331,000, comes from a state fund that must be used for clean-air programs. The council has applied for a grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District to cover the difference.

The council also voted to put in charging stations at City Hall.
