Suter expressed regret for the hit on Kariya that has deprived the Anaheim winger of a chance to play for Canada.

“I certainly regret the situation,” a contrite Suter said. “I had hoped that Paul would have been able to play. It is unfortunate that he cannot.

“The NHL has dealt with the disciplinary end of this. I have to put this behind me and get ready to play,” Suter said through a Team USA spokesman.

Dallas Star forward Jamie Langenbrunner has been added to the U.S. roster to replace injured Ottawa forward Shawn McEachern, team officials announced.

McEachern is suffering from a lower back strain that had not healed enough to allow him to play, USA General Manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement issued by the team.

“We are fortunate, however, to have a player with the skill and ability that Jamie Langenbrunner brings to our team ready to step in for Shawn,” Lamoriello said.

The United States opened round-robin play against defending Olympic champions Sweden on Friday in the first Winter Games to allow NHL professionals, but Langenbrunner will not be available to play until the team’s third game against Canada on Monday, Lamoriello said.

Langenbrunner ranks fourth on the Stars in scoring with 42 points on 17 goals and 25 assists in 56 games.
