Fruits and Grains

Artist Pamela Burgess’ love of nature is coming out in the woodwork.

Her handmade boxes, adorned with dried blooms and fruits, are a melding of “both the creation of nature and the hand of the artist,” says Burgess, who lives in Los Angeles.

The Wild Pods series of storage boxes are made of ponderosa pine, Buggie blue and cedar, which Burgess treats with stains and paints to enhance their visual impact.

Each box ($55 to $65) is signed by Burgess, who selects the element of the box and combines it with complementary and contrasting textures.

Wild lilies, poppies, okra, pomegranates and cedar roses top each box.

“You have to grasp the pod to lift the lid,” Burgess says. “I’m interested in accessing the silent ties that link all of us with the natural world.”

Burgess’ Wild Pods series boxes are sold at the Company of Angels in Newport Beach, (714) 644-3944, and Regalo in San Juan Capistrano, (714) 493-3639. Or call (800) 600-3458.

Stripe It

Sierra Stripe is the latest addition to Sure Fit’s Casual Living collection of one-piece slipcovers for Fieldcrest.

The slipcovers, 100% cotton, are yarn-dyed wovens that feel like denim. The pattern features alternating sized stripes of indigo, natural, taupe and red. The slipcover will easily coordinate with the colors of most casual rooms.

Sierra Stripe also features Sure Fit’s new straight skirt design, in which the elasticized ruffled skirt has been eliminated to produce a waterfall front. The elasticized arms ensure a snug fit on upholstered arms of nearly any shape and size.

The slipcovers (about $80 for chair size, $130 for love seat and $150 for sofa) are available at Linens N’ Things and Strouds. For the nearest store, call (888) 754-7166 or visit Sure Fit’s Web site: www.surefit.net

True Grit

Smooth things over with Ryobi’s sixth-sheet sander, which has been re-engineered for heavy-duty use and is once again available in the United States.

The only palm-grip sander ($40-$50, depending on model) of its size on the market, it features a one-sixteenth-inch elliptical orbit sanding pattern that is preferred by woodworkers, furniture refinishers and cabinetmakers because the pattern won’t ruin the raised edges or sides of a piece.

The sanding pad size is 3 inches by 4 1/2 inches. Sanding paper is attached by wire clips.

The sander has a 1.5 amp, all-ball-bearing motor and weighs 2.1 pounds.

It’s available at home centers throughout the county. For information, call: (800) 525-2579 or visit Ryobi’s Web site: www.ryobi.com
