Miscikowski Seeks New Curbs on Sex Clubs

With the proliferation of adult entertainment businesses, including sexual encounter clubs, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski on Friday called for the city to strengthen its zoning laws to make it harder for such businesses to operate in the city.

Last fall the council grappled with a politically tricky zoning exemption for a sex club in East Hollywood, with several council members voting for the club because the city’s laws allowed it.

Miscikowski, who is a member of the council’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee, said the city’s adult entertainment ordinance needs to be widened to include such uses as sexual encounter clubs. She proposed that any new sexually oriented adult entertainment business be required to obtain a conditional use permit if it is within 500 feet of a religious institution, school or public park or if it is within 1,000 feet of any other adult entertainment business.

The current ordinance prohibits adult entertainment businesses from, among other things, operating within 500 feet of religious institutions, schools or public parks.
