Simi Valley Mayor Greg Stratton took out papers Friday to enter the race to replace Ventura County Assessor Glenn Gray, who is retiring after 36 years.

Stratton joins a growing list of hopefuls for the $111,000-a-year job. That list includes county appraiser James Dodd, assistant county attorney Larry Matheny, real estate appraiser Daniel Goodwin and manufacturing engineer Carroll Dean Williams.

Other candidates are expected to join the race. They have until March 11 to file for the June 2 primary.

This would be the second time Stratton has made a run for a county post.

During the last election, Stratton made a bid for county auditor-controller but was declared ineligible because he did not have the necessary educational requirements. Those requirements have since been changed.

Stratton said he is looking forward to the race, and promised to clear red tape from the assessor’s office if elected.

“I thought I knew bureaucracy until I dealt with the assessor’s office,” Stratton said, adding that during his tenure at the helm of Simi Valley he has had more than a few problems with that office.

Stratton said he will file the papers with the county next week.
