How Administation Fees Add Up

Share

Regarding the story headlined “Some Brokers Add New Fees to Home Costs” (Feb. 1): Adding “administration fees” to the already accepted exorbitant commission of 6% for the sale of one house takes some nerve!

A house that sells for $600,000 earns a commission of $36,000. This is about the average yearly salary of a teacher in the Los Angeles School District. No wonder so many teachers have become real estate agents!

I would like to clarify a few of the points concerning Coldwell Banker.

First, when Coldwell Banker purchased the Jon Douglas Co., that brokerage had been charging a client service fee for several years to offset increasing regulatory, legal and technology costs. This was in lieu of charging a higher commission rate.

Second, the client service fee of $250 is for the San Fernando Valley.

Third, our agents do not and are not expected to pay the client service fee. Our agents work extremely hard for their commission and deserve what they earn.
