Turning the Capital Into a Biker Town

Talk about a whirlwind tour: 55 sites in three hours in Washington, D.C.

Actually, you roll past most of the gardens, museums and monuments on the “Capital Sites Tour” run by Bike the Sites Inc., with a few longer stops on Capitol Hill and outside the White House. But it’s a “good overview,” insists company president Gary Oelsner, and you get a little exercise, too.

“Average people go on our tours--not cycle-maniacs,” says Oelsner, 38, who has offered the program since 1996. “Spandex is not required.” Tourists into their 70s have signed up, and children nine and older (with an adult) are welcome. The trip covers eight miles--all on paths, away from street traffic--at a leisurely pace, with lectures en route on the capital’s history, architecture and current exhibits, he adds.

The tours are seasonal. This year, they start up again on March 15, running twice daily through Nov. 30; times vary by season. The cost is $35 per person, which includes a bicycle, helmet, water bottle and snack. Advance reservations are recommended.
