Mayor’s Wedding

Share

Based on headlines over the past several weeks, I was not surprised by the revelation that Cardinal Roger Mahony is condemning Mayor Richard Riordan for his upcoming marriage (Feb. 12). I am not arguing with the Catholic Church’s stance on the subject (although I believe it to be absolutely archaic); but I do take issue with Mahony’s public statement.

If a close friend of mine, regardless of his/her professional expertise, publicly denounced something I had done, or was about to do, that person would no longer be a friend. I congratulate Riordan for his marriage, and I suggest that he look elsewhere for religious counsel.

* How can Mahony reject the mayor’s full participation in the church after marriage? Mahony must see that the “relationship” between the mayor and his bride was looked down upon by the church much more than the marriage of someone who has been divorced. It is also ironic that Mahony doesn’t let the mayor “off the hook” for financial contributions to the church.
