Council Is Torn Over Housing Development
A controversial question of whether homes should be built on a 5-acre parcel owned by Southern California Edison will be decided this month.
The City Council recently delayed a vote on the project amid concerns that more houses in the area would contribute to traffic congestion. In addition, some residents with nearby one-story houses said the proposed two-story structures would invade their privacy.
Summerwood Homes Inc. of Newport Beach is seeking an amendment to the city’s general plan to build 34 homes on the property, about 600 feet east of Newland Street near Hazard Avenue and Blakey Park.
The land is being used as open space around power lines. Under the development proposal, Edison would retain a 30-foot-wide portion for its power lines.
