Academy Averts a ‘Titanic’ Mistake

Share

It is disturbing to think that so many fans of Jim Cameron’s “Titanic” (Saturday’s Letters, Feb. 14) believe that the film deserved a best screenplay nod from the academy.

An intelligent script, insightful dialogue and character development are basic requirements for a film to win the Oscar. While “Titanic” was a superb marriage of drama and action, the technical achievements of the sinking made the characters one-dimensional by comparison.

It is refreshing to know that the academy is above giving the popular vote, and that film reviewers like Kenneth Turan aren’t afraid to point this out.
