White Lifts Waves over Portland

Senior guard Angie White made a 15-foot jump shot with 51 seconds to play, giving Pepperdine a 59-58 victory over Portland in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball game Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Pepperdine (20-9, 10-4 in conference play) finished in second place, one game ahead of Portland (18-9, 9-5). It was the Waves’ best finish since the inception of the WCC in the 1985-86 season and their most overall victories since 1980-81.

Junior guards Dana Sulenski and Samantha Rigley, a former Alemany High standout, scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, for Pepperdine. They each made four three-point baskets.

Pepperdine will play seventh-place Gonzaga in the first round of the WCC tournament Thursday at Santa Clara.

In another women’s basketball game:

Canyons 81, Glendale 46--Zevette Mitchell recorded a triple-double and blocked five shots to help host Canyons (26-7, 12-0) complete its fourth undefeated Western State Conference South Division season in five years.

Mitchell had 12 points, 18 rebounds and 11 steals for the Cougars, who have won two consecutive division titles.

Wendy Gussner scored 18 points and Laura Tweedy scored 17 for Canyons.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 80, Claremont-Mudd 54--Mike Salser had 25 points and 17 rebounds for the victorious Kingsmen (13-10, 9-3) in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

CS Los Angeles 67, The Master’s 53--Jerome Joseph scored 15 points for Master’s (18-11) in a nonconference game at Cal State Los Angeles.

BASEBALL

Northern Iowa 6, CS Northridge 5--Northern Iowa rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning of a pool-play game at the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament in Phoenix.

Darren Dyt had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, and Nakia Hill had a single and a home run for Northridge (10-8).

Oxnard 3-9, San Diego Mesa 1-3--Tom Manos (2-1) went the distance, scattering seven hits, striking out 10 and walking nonein the second game of a doubleheader at Oxnard (7-3).

Pierce 10-5, San Diego City 6-2--Barry Matthews of Pierce (4-4) scattered 13 hits and struck out six in the first game at the Grossmont tournament.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UCLA d. CS Northridge, 15-6, 15-3, 15-3--Adam Naeve had 19 kills for No. 1 UCLA (12-0, 8-0) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at UCLA. Chad Strickland had 11 kills for Northridge (3-7, 1-7).
