Highway 138

Share

The head-on collision on Highway 138 (a.k.a. “Highway to Heaven”) that killed five people on Feb. 14 is not an isolated occurrence on this highway. We face this hazard and have near-misses every time we drive on this road.

It is the only corridor between the 14 and the 15 freeways, with heavy truck traffic, besides being the alternate route used when the 5 Freeway is closed. It is a major link for commerce and pleasure. You would think the state would make this road one of its priorities. Not so! The answer from Caltrans officials has always been the same: There is no budget for a new highway or an enlargement of the present one. There is not even an adequate presence of Highway Patrol. And there is anarchy going on here: drivers going 80 miles an hour on a 55-mph highway, passing on left turn and accelerating lanes, passing on blind curves, etc.

Shame on officials who don’t do anything about this deadly road!
