League Is Trying to Get Some Restraining Order

The Ducks and Vancouver Canucks each spent part of Tuesday watching a 30-minute videotape prepared by the NHL that explains the league’s new get-tough policy on restraining fouls. The league has vowed to crack down on interference in hopes of boosting scoring.

“They’re going to use the one-bump policy like they have in the NFL,” Duck Coach Pierre Page said. “You can interfere with somebody, hit them once, then you have to let them go.”

Page has been outspoken about the need for better policing of the interference rules, particularly since Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya often have been the targets of such tactics this season.

Vancouver Coach Mike Keenan merely rolled his eyes when asked about the tape.

Talk about jet lag. Defenseman Dmitri Mironov and goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov, who helped Russia win the silver medal at the Olympics, returned Monday night from Nagano, Japan. They were given permission to sleep late and miss Tuesday’s practice.

But they were at the Arrowhead Pond in time to catch the team bus to LAX for an afternoon flight to Vancouver. It prompted one dressing room wit to crack, “Why didn’t they just fly straight to Vancouver?”

Update--Vancouver’s Pavel Bure is coming off a superb showing in the Olympics for Russia, leading all players in the tournament with nine goals. He has moved into sixth place in the NHL in scoring with 34 goals and 60 points. The Canucks won four of five games leading up to the Olympic break, but remain in last place in the Pacific Division.
