Development Hearing Moved to Civic Auditorium

Anticipating a huge turnout for a hearing Monday on a proposal to build shops and a movie theater on South Lake Avenue, the City Council has moved the meeting to the civic auditorium.

The huge venue--more accustomed to hosting the Emmys, the NAACP Image Awards and the Pasadena Pops--will now be the battleground for a debate over development. A Planning Commission hearing last year drew more than 400 residents.

The project calls for upscale retail stores, a restaurant, a Gelson’s market, a movie theater and a parking lot built around an existing Macy’s department store.

The plan is bitterly opposed by neighbors and preservationists who have expressed concerns about the potential impact on the historic department store and on nearby residential streets.

The proposal has won the support of many business leaders.
