Top-Ranked UCLA Beats No. 14 UC Irvine in Volleyball

Mike Rupp had 14 kills but UC Irvine, ranked 14th in the nation, lost to No. 1 UCLA in three games Thursday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Thursday in Westwood.

Donnie Rafter added 13 kills for the Anteaters (8-4, 5-4), which lost, 15-5, 15-6, 15-6.

Mark Williams and Adam Naeve had 15 kills each for UCLA (14-0, 10-0).

Brandon Taliaferro (San Clemente High) had 45 assists also for the Bruins. Kevin Dake had 36 assists for UC Irvine.

In nonconference baseball:

George Fox (Ore.) 8, Concordia 5--George Fox (Ore.) scored six runs in the final three innings to to take the lead and defeat host Concordia.

Eric Velazquez and Jeff Stodgel each had RBI singles in the fourth innings and gave Concordia (4-6) a 3-1 lead.

George Fox (3-3) scored on in the sixth and three in the seventh, with two outs, to take the lead for good.

Ben Kindreich had three hits for the Eagles.

The Master’s 5, Chapman 3--Rob O’Brien was two for three including a solo home run, his third of the season, for Chapman. Jim Brewer (1-2) gave up four earned runs and four hits in six innings of work for the Panthers (6-3).

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 1-3, UC Riverside 7-0--Jen Houston pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts in the second game to save a split for Southern California College. Gretchen Brandt had a two-run single in the first inning for the Vanguards (9-3).

In the first game, UC Riverside (3-5) scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning.
