When it comes to catching car thieves, Pomona Police Officer Rob McCrary is the city’s undisputed champion.

On New Year’s Eve he made his 42nd arrest of the year for grand theft auto--the second consecutive year in which he has made more than 40 arrests of occupied stolen vehicles, Sgt. Kevin Rogan said.

McCrary saw two teenage boys in a car about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday after noting that they were having difficulty operating it, Rogan said

When McCrary pulled the car over at Wisconsin and Alvarado streets, the driver and passenger ran away. McCrary caught the 15-year-old who had been the driver, while other officers found the 17-year-old passenger hiding on a front porch. The car was stolen and both teenagers were arrested on suspicion of auto theft. They were released to their parents, police said.
