Electric Bicycles Donated for Deputies

Bike patrols in the Lomita area have gotten a push now that sheriff’s deputies are riding electric bicycles that give them the option of pedaling or using electric propulsion.

The Lomita sheriff’s station was one of 30 law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles County that received electric bikes from Southern California Edison this week. The power company distributed nearly 400 EV Warriors that were paid for by local companies that wish to remain anonymous, according to an Edison spokesman.

Sheriff’s stations in Lomita, Lakewood, Riverside and San Bernardino received bikes, as did police departments in Los Angeles, Anaheim, Simi Valley, Hesperia, Lake Elsinore, Moreno Valley and Perris.

The Lomita station, which is responsible for patrolling Lomita and much of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, received four bicycles. Sheriff’s officials said the bikes will increase their mobility and improve patrols of shopping centers.

“These bikes will make it easier for us to get around the hilly areas on the peninsula,” Lt. Mike Grimaldi said. “They will also be a very good tool for community policing.”
