Frances Gutierrez; Longtime Navy Base Worker
Frances Gutierrez, who worked at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme for 37 years, died in her Santa Barbara home Saturday. She was 81.
Gutierrez was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Durango, Mexico. She was an infant when her family moved to the United States, where her father was a railroad worker. The family followed his work and traveled to New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada before settling in Santa Barbara.
In 1943, Gutierrez, a graduate of Santa Barbara High School, began work in Port Hueneme at what was then called the Advance Base Depot. She retired 37 years later as a computer systems analyst. Family friends said she took great pride in her work and professional achievement.
Gutierrez is survived by daughter Gloria Guevarra of Santa Barbara, two grandchildren, four sisters and four brothers.
A rosary will be recited Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Santa Barbara. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m., also at the church.
