Council Wants Caspers to Remain Open to Minors
Despite threats of mountain lion attacks in Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, the City Council will urge county supervisors to keep the park open to minors.
“It’s very important we make it clear that this great asset we have is in jeopardy because people are not taking responsibility for their actions,” Mayor Gil Jones said, explaining that visitors are warned about mountain lions.
The city plans to send a letter to the Orange County Board of Supervisors with the request to keep the park open for all visitors. The board is expected to discuss the issue again at a meeting Tuesday.
On Dec. 16, supervisors voted 3 to 2 to reopen the 7,600-acre park to minors for the first time in five years. It was closed to youngsters after attacks on small children in 1986 led to a $1.5-million settlement in 1992.
A recent mountain lion scare prompted two supervisors to call for a reversal of the decision to open the park to minors.
