Mission Barracks to Get Needed Repairs

Share

Military barracks at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano will get a much-needed face-lift thanks to a $300,000 donation of materials and labor from the Building Industry Assn.

Mission officials say the crumbling wood shingle roof needs replacing with a clay tile roof, as originally used during construction in 1791. The roof and adobe brick walls are so deteriorated that visitors are blocked from entering the building. Instead, they view the scene through a glass partition.

Additionally, mission officials recently announced that Kaiser Permanente has donated $10,000 for a program that teaches children about the mission’s history, and the Weingart Foundation of Los Angeles donated $100,000 to preserve the sagging companario, or bell wall.
