School Chief’s Absence to Be Topic of Meeting

Trustees of the Laguna Beach Unified School District will hold a closed meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday to discuss Supt. Reed Montgomery’s six-week absence from the district.

Montgomery, 51, was scheduled to be examined earlier this week by a district-appointed doctor.

Board President Kathryn A. Turner confirmed that Montgomery had met with a doctor but she declined to release any other information.

Montgomery, whose last day on the job was Dec. 5, had asked for a monthlong paid medical leave.

Trustees twice denied the request, saying he hadn’t given them sufficient information.

The board then placed Montgomery on paid administrative leave, which began Monday and was scheduled to continue until the results of his physical exam were available.

The school board will allow public comment before it meets in closed session, Turner said. Reed has held the district’s top administrative post since July.
