Baseball Team Still Lacks District OK

Admitting they might have jumped the gun, league officials gave the Pacific Suns minor league baseball team permission to announce an opening game at Oxnard College before receiving college district approval.

“It’s true to say not all the t’s are crossed and all the i’s are dotted,” said Tom Kowitz, executive director of the Western Baseball League. The Suns have set their first game for May 23.

Although Kowitz said he expects to hear from Ventura County Community College District officials by the end of next week, a district spokesperson said it is unclear whether trustees will even vote on the issue at their next meeting Jan. 20.

Oxnard City Council members approved an environmental study Tuesday, indicating the minor league team would not cause any significant problems by playing at Oxnard College this year. The study is now subject to college district approval.

“The league is working under the assumption that everything will be approved,” Kowitz said.

The Western Baseball League is an eight-team, two-division structure, with each team playing 90 games.
